Radar Ockham

Lançamento do Radar Ockham

ABC documentary lands in UFO territory

February 24, 2005
By Alessandra Stanley New York Times
During a sweeps month, UFO is not solely an abbreviation for unidentified flying object. When a veteran network anchor devotes two hours to the subject in a special prime-time report, UFO can also be code for uncontrollable fear of obscurity.
Tom Brokaw’s retirement as the NBC anchor did not drive viewers to ABC en masse; actually, the ratings of his replacement, Brian Williams, are higher than Peter Jennings’. Even Dan Rather’s fall from grace and imminent retirement have not significantly benefited ABC’s “World News Tonight.” And that may help explain the mystery of why Jennings, ABC’s lofty and fastidious anchorman, chose to lend his gravitas to a lengthy examination of extraterrestrial life forms.

Neobyasnimo, no fakt!

Freak Show

A brand-new television show taps into the Russian appetite for paranormal phenomena.
By Brian Droitcour
Published: February 25, 2005
Clinical death, an alien corpse discovered near Chelyabinsk and a lake-dwelling monster in the Tver region are some of the paranormal phenomena that the new television show “Inexplicable, But True!” (”Neobyasnimo, no fakt!”) promises to investigate. The show’s creators are betting that the Russian audience’s readiness to believe in psychic powers and UFOs will guarantee good ratings. They are also confident that their down-to-earth approach — making arguments based on facts, eyewitness testimony and photographic and video evidence — will enable them to shrug off criticism from skeptics and potentially hostile organizations like the Russian Orthodox Church.

Cerro Uritorco

Psst - Hey, you! Yeah, you, the museum guy. C’mere.
Have I got a deal for you! Right here outta my car trunk I’m selling the actual plastic box King Tut was buried in. Not interested?
Then how about these two genuine Christopher Columbus skulls: one from when he was a kid and one when he was an old man. Or maybe this 9th-century Viking map of Sheboygan? You can buy them all at wholesale. Just don’t ask too many questions.. . .

Breast size determines personality

An Italian sex researcher claims he can tell a woman’s personality from the size and shape of her breasts.
According to German newspaper Bild sexologist Piero Lorenzoni said: “A woman’s breasts denote a woman’s character, just like her star sign.”
